Cars. A car may be iconic but does iconic mean legendary? No. The Mercedes Benz E class has forever been an icon of taxi motoring in Germany and the UK for years but does that mean that it is a legend? Of course not. Mercedes Benz has a lot of icons but legends are slightly trickier to name however. Mystique i believe is is the key to a legend. Legendary products have to get you wondering. It has to captivate the minds of the people in whichever area it is. I have a list of what I think are the most legendary Mercedes Benz products of all time.

10. AMG Hammer

Author Mr.choppers

These cars are so mysterious. It has a 6.0l V8 AMG engine and you definitely have to know to know because this car has a market value of around $600000. The AMG hammer is based on the w124 Mercedes but taken to a different level. It has dish wheels as one of the give aways of its crazy performance and they all came in dark paint jobs. It’s like the Buick Grand National of Germany. Just the paint is enough to let people know that this is a serious car you don’t want to mess with. On top of that, they made something like 30 of them for the whole world. These have already taken off in value and theres no coming down from here. This car is the definition of a gangster Mercedes. Even the badge is a different colour. It is a symbol of raw visceral AMG savagery from the late 1980’s. I’m surprised it even got made in the first place and if i saw one on the streets i would be mind blown.

9. Mercedes Benz CL65 AMG

Author: Francesco Gasparetti

The CL65 is a shock of a car, no one really understands why this car even exists in the first place. the CL has many variants including the CL63 (V8) and the CL600 which has the same V12 engine as the CL65 and is just as fast as the CL63. The CL65 is barely faster than the 63 yet its almost £50000 more than it but the CL65 just is so cool. It has over 1000nm of torque. It is also so rare that i would flip out if i saw one on the road. It’s also longer, wider and heavier than the S-class yet it has only two doors and is meant for two plus two people. The CL65 is a superficial expression of wealth and is a symbol of true power and true excess and combined with its rarity is why i believe it deserves a good spot on this list of legends. No one truly understands why they made it and most people will be scared to own it because of what it represents and the fear of what could happen if it goes wrong. Even if someone got this car for free, they would probably just sell it not just because of running costs but mainly because of that fear. This ads a level of mystique to this car and makes it legendary in a Mercedes CL way.

8. Mercedes G-Class

By Lumma Design

The G63 AMG is the car that is known everywhere. It is like a Land Rover 110 or Jeep Wrangler. The G wagen originated from military use and then saw civilian versions brought to production as the wanting for luxury variants increased. The Model code remained the same even after its first real change since the 1970’s in 2018 called the W463. The thing that confuses me is the inconsistency of Mercedes naming e.g the coupes all start with C in the model code but the SUV’s are all over the place. The GLS starts with an X and the GLE starts with a V but the G starts with a W like the S classes and C classes. Their naming doesn’t make sense. The GL400 is actually a 3.0l and the C63 is a 2.0l. ML350 sometimes had a 3.0l and sometimes a 3.5l and to make it worse, there was also an ML300 with a 3.0l. Before all that it made more sense but now it doesn’t just like BMW, the 30d is a 3.0l but so is the 40d and M50d, where is the sense? Diverting back to the G, the vehicle is equipped with 3 locking differentials which is one more than the Land Rover Defender. It also has this distinct roaring exhaust noise that is unique to the G respectively and no other Mercedes AMG. The G is also extremely bad in a good way. It is so boss and yet its also cute at the same time. It also has that military mystique because you know what it can do despite how good it looks. Its like one of those cute frogs that are poisonous. You are also aware that the V8 engines are mostly unnecessary but they all add to the drama that the car has. It is a sin to not put this car down as a legend.

7. Mercedes Benz SLS AMG

The SLS AMG was such a big deal when it came out. It is such a good car. It had the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine at the time when it came out producing 1 more horsepower than the Ferrari 458. It is a gorgeous car from every single angle. It was also marketed very well, it even had its own game for iPad. It also has one of AMG’s all time great engines called the ‘M158’ which was a 6.2l V8 engine labelled as a 63. This same engine also came in the C63, CL63, S63 and so many other Mercedes models including the notorious R63. The SLS AMG was also famous for its flipping 360 stunt. And let’s not forget the best part, since the SLS was a tribute to the 300sl, it also got the gull-wing doors which i believe will make this car go down in history. This car was also the successor to the SLR McLaren so it had huge boots to fill. The Mercedes SLS AMG easily earns this spot on the list of Legends.

6. Mercedes S Class W140

Source: Marek Argent

The W140 is known world-wide for its reputation as pinnacle Mercedes build quality. When you picture a Mercedes Benz, many people will probably think of the W140. It has a-lot in common with predecessors such as the W100 Grosser Mercedes. If it wasn’t so common, it would have scored higher on this list.I believe this will go down in history as one of Mercedes’s greatest vehicles. Theres also the story of how the designer (Bruno Sacco) thought it was 4 inches too tall. Bruno Sacco transformed the whole Mercedes look and this was one of the products he was responsible for. This was in the generation of the last true Mercedes ‘bank vault’ cars before the W220 came along. It was built to a standard rather than to a budget. Mercedes allegedly spent over $1 billion developing the W140 whilst Dodge only spent $50 million on the viper. The W140 also has its brother called the C140 which is also known as the S class coupe or the Cl in some markets. There were some variants with the Pagani V12 such as the S72 AMG (C140) which were used by Japanese gangsters. This is not just unique to the C140 but also the W140 it-self has its S70 AMG with a 7.3l engine and some of these crazy versions are capable of hitting over 200 mph. Can you believe what this will sound like in the future? It already sounds crazy in 2023 when the C63 is a 4 cylinder 2.0 litre. The W140 is without doubt the best s-class for its time and i think it will go down as a classic very soon so prepare your cheque books if anyone even uses those anymore.

5. Mercedes Benz CLK GTR

Author Calreyn88

This car fascinates me first of all because it is named after a car it has nothing to do with. When someone says CLK GTR you’d imagine it would be that C class looking thing but with a wing but, when you see a picture of the GTR then you’ll be like what the hell? It looks like something out of a cartoon. It looks fictional even in 2023. It only shares a few parts with the CLK and hence an actual road version of the CLK had to be made in order to meet homologation regulations. This car is also notorious for flipping at speed where it would actually take off like a plane. That already gives this car a legend to carry with it. If someone was told to drive it, they would be absolutely terrified because of the stories and that could also be slightly exciting. Its also worth millions to add to that terror (£1.5 to £8 million+). It is a road going race car with racing pedigree and interesting stories to back it up and for that reason, it absolutely earns the right to its legend title.

4. Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren

Author: Alexandre Prevot

The Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren is the most underrated Mercedes even at its hype level. This car is crazy on all levels. It was faster round a track than a Pagani Zonda yet it was a GT Mercedes. The car was made in McLaren’s factory and was based on the SL55 AMG. The whole body of the SL was scrapped and replaced with carbon fibre. The 722 version had more power and a slightly darker look. The SLR was built after the McLaren F1 at the time although not as a spiritual successor. From the long nose to the airbrake and the super-charged V8, the SLR McLaren is something of a Mercedes Lovers dream. If i saw one on the streets, I would freak out. It was part of this supercar trio between it, the Enzo and Porsche Carrera GT even though it was a front engine GT car. Its top speed was 208mph which made it faster than the Carrera GT. Many people have seen SL’s but if you see an SLR, you’re lucky! I believe because of McLaren’s Input with this car, it will go down as a classic very quickly and before we know it, people will be scrambling for an SLR McLaren.

3. Mercedes Benz Motor Wagen

The car that invented all cars. The Benz motor wagen is a legend by all accounts. It started what we all know today which is the cars we all see and love to drive. The reason that it doesn’t take the number 1 and two spot is that you have to know to know what it is otherwise most people will just think it’s a really old car but will have no idea that it was the first car ever. As an item of significance and as the most important Mercedes this will easily win. The Motor Wagen is the Most important car in the entire world. If you take it to any car show it will almost always win because of the significance it plays in the motor industry. I am sure if it were to be sold, it would be priceless.

2. Mercedes Benz 300 SL & SLR

The Mercedes Gullwing is the Mercedes that is salivated over. The Mercedes 300 is without doubt also one of the top 3 most iconic Mercedes products up there with the W140 and other products. The 300 SL can be found at every vintage car show across any continent. It is the silver lining in the cloud of average vintage cars that most people pretend to care about. When you see it, you know its expensive. It looks like its meant to cost 1 million dollars. Of-course the 300Sl can cost way more than that and originally was based on an actual race car but the 300 road version was actually more powerful than the race car. The 300 also featured a nicer interior than the race version. The only reason the 300 doesn’t take the number 1 spot is because it doesn’t carry as much mystique as the top spot and is also not as rare. For a legend to be a legend, it has to represent the brand and all its values and what it is known for and no car can match that better than the number 1 spot. The 300sl is a race car which represents the Mercedes race car side but the Mercedes most of us are familiar with are associated with Luxury, Elegance and sheer excess.

1. Mercedes Benz 600 ‘The Grosser Mercedes’

https://www.supercars.net/blog/1963→1981-mercedes-benz-600-pullman-landaulet/

Mystique is a difficult thing especially is you have no idea but, there is no arguing with the grosser Mercedes. Even if you know nothing about cars and saw this thing, you would know that It’s the dictator’s Mercedes. This car has so much mystique that you can leave it unlocked in London and no one will touch it. Very many feared people owned it and the fact that it is rare and was the most expensive car in the world says a-lot. Theres very few cars in the world where you give a name and people automatically start naming the people that bought it but the Mercedes 600 has a very long notorious list. The mysterious part is no one truly understands why this pattern of people kept buying it. On top of that, you had to be rich to afford it even today and also have guts to drive it. If you drive any of the cars on this list today on the road and probably get away with it unnoticed but not with the 600 and the motor-wagen. People will look at you and be like ‘who the hell is that and what the hell is going on’ If you’re seen in it regardless of location. A service could cost upwards of £15000. Everything is powered by hydraulics including the sunroof. It just always looks like someone of great importance is inside it. There’s also landaulet versions that cost upwards of £1.5 million even today. This car is over 40 years old but any head of state could jump in it and be uplifted. It even comes with flag posts on the side with the long wheelbase pullman version. Less than 3000 were made and it’s practically impossible to find one on the streets today and if you did, the only car that could command as much presence is the Bentley State Limousine. If you did find one in the days when it was new then you’d probably start running away. The Grosser Mercedes is the ‘Grand Mercedes’ literally. It is everything Mercedes stands for at its ultimate form of Mercedes. It was replaced years later by the Maybach 57 and 62 but none more since. Absolute legend of a Mercedes even if it may not be for the best reasons.
