Are The Range Rover Sport L320 and The Discovery 4 really the same car? In short, sort of…. let me explain.
Legend has it that these are the same car and I sort of to an extent believe them. The wheelbase is exactly the same. The construction is the same and even the width from tire to tire. They say the Range Rover Sport L320 was based on the Discovery 3/L319 platform. The Discovery 4 also shares the code name L319 so underneath they are the same.
They however have some big differences one being the 7 seats on the discovery and the variation in Engine choices and transmission and suspension tuning. The body is different too but the elephant in the room was very obvious.
The same goes for the interior and general features. I don’t know about you but the Range Rover Sport feels more like a 5 seat discovery than a smaller Range Rover. If you have a Discovery HSE Lux and a Sport of similar equipment, they will feel just as premium on the inside. If you however have an Autobiography Range Rover and compare it to the Sport then you will feel the difference. The big Range Rover Autobiography is like a premium lounge for the most serious tycoons.
The Sport has this jet cockpit feel when you are sitting inside but the Discovery has this airy feel. The Discovery feels like more of a playful vibe while the sport feels more serious. It’s like watching Tom and Jerry vs Scooby Doo. Yes one is fun in an enjoyable way but the other is fun in a more serious way.
Let’s actually talk serious stuff because i’m sure that many people actually want to hear that. In terms of driving dynamics, they are very very different. The Sport has anti-roll bars so on the road it rides slightly firmer than the Discovery. The Ride quality of both on the highway is the same but on annoying roads then, the Discovery is simply a more comfortable car. It feels like it has more rear travel and is better at dealing with bumps.
Theres this funny thing but you’re actually more likely to be pulled over for speeding in the Discovery because it has less of a sensation of speed than the sport. The Sport feels like it’s moving quickly even when it’s not. The Sport is available with a supercharged V8 while the Discovery 4 wasn’t but, in everyday use, it’s a very minor difference. Because the Discovery has 600nm at a lower rpm, it feels like it has similar overtaking boost to the sport. It’s only when the revs get higher and on the highway where you will notice the sports advantage however around town, the discovery feels light and up and ready to go.
I don’t know but for some reason the Discovery feels like a lighter car. It feels smaller on the road even though it’s not. When you corner in the sport, you can feel that something is going on with the anti-roll bars and all that but in the Discovery, it feels more like what it is which is an over 6ft car. For that reason you trust the Discovery more in corners because you know what is going on as opposed to the sport where you are unsure when physics will kick in.
Now the real difference comes down to the buyer because to be honest, thats the real difference. The Discovery is a more diplomatic car. Thats why you see them at embassy’s or the UN while the Sport is a lifestyle car. If you are young and looking to be stylish and/or if you are middle aged and want a car to drive everyday then the Range Rover Sport is for you. If however you want to make less of an impression and/or don’t want to make a statement then the Discovery 4 is for you. Also if you have children around then the Discovery 4 is a better option because its a more fun option for families. Theres something about its fun boxy nature that appeals to families. The L322 buyer however, could be anyone.
If however that is not enough of a conclusion for you then, If you like to wear loafers and suede shoes with fitting clothes and a silver watch with a contrasting strap and a Chanel fragrance or for women, if you have a dog in your purse and wear gloss high heels then look no further than the Range Rover Sport. For the Discovery, If you like to wear Timberland boots and like adventures and exploring then look no further than the Land Rover Discovery 4.
